Jenny

Hi everyone

Sorry it has taken me so long to post my introduction! My name is Jenny Scheffers and I’m the fulltime teacher librarian at Caddies Creek Public School, in Glenwood (in western Sydney, near Parklea Markets). This is only my second year as the T/L at Caddies – having previously worked as the T/L at Marayong, Merrylands East and Marayong Heights Public Schools.

Although Caddies Creek PS is only 5 years old, it has a very large student enrolment of 700; comprising 27 mainstream classes and 3 Support classes. The library program incorporates CPT (Co-operative Planning & Teaching) and a flexible timetable. Another teacher is employed 1 / day per week to cover the additional library staffing allocation.

Like all of you, I strongly believe that the Library should be a very dynamic and vital hub of the school and that the library’s teaching and learning program should strongly support and integrate with the classroom programs. I am very proactive in promoting the Library and its services to the whole school community (students, staff and parents).

Evidence Based Practice Research offers a most valuable and exciting tool for measuring the impact of the school library’s program on students’ learning outcomes. The findings not only provide feedback for current teaching and learning programs but also guide future directions for teacher librarians.

I am very interested in what Guided Inquiry has to offer as a research tool for TLs and also as a means of assisting students with their learning. Last term I trialled a Guided Inquiry Unit with 5 Stage 3 classes, based on the HSIE unit of Global Connections. I have almost finalised the results of this study, based on the Year 6 students’ responses. I am currently planning a Stage 2 CPT Guided Inquiry Unit for next term. I feel very excited about this new approach/ development in the field of Teacher Librarianship!
I look forward to meeting you at the mountains Retreat weekend and sharing our research journeys together!
Cheers
Jenny
